No particular build in this time, I just really liked this cover of one of my favourite songs.
After their horrendous argument last episode the Doctor and Clara are taking one last trip together, going out with one last hurrah. They find themselves on the orient express... in space! Because of course it is, it’s Doctor Who. Shortly before they arrived a woman died, before she died she saw a mummy, but only she could see it. More people are starting to die, always with 66 seconds of seeing this monster before their deaths; The Doctor sets out to solve the mystery, what is this creature? Why is it here? How can it be stopped? And who exactly is the mysterious Gus, that seems to be orchestrating things from behind the scenes?
This was another decent bit of fun; the Doctor leaping into a Poirot style murder mystery really shows the kind of thing you can do with the character. He can slot into any kind of story and roll with it, but sizing up people with suspicion and playing his cards close to the chest is something that Peter Capaldi seems especially good at and I hope there’s more of this sort of thing in his future. Also he offers jelly babies from a cigarette case and that is awesome.
This episode once again deals with The Doctor’s callousness and willingness to let people die without a second thought if it means he can solve the mystery. It’s still an odd thing to get used to after so many years of the Doctor getting so weepy over deaths, but I feel it is actually more interesting viewing than previously.
Clara felt a little bit sidelined in this episode, stuck off in a storage compartment for the majority of the episode and not really getting involved until someone had to tell the Doctor he was cold and heartless. Then at the end she made a snap decision to keep going with the Doctor that felt a little more like something they did because they had to continue with the regular formula. I don’t know, just felt a little poorly handled to me.

The mummy, or foretold, was an interesting monster; it moved slowly and offered very little threat unless you could see it then you had no hope. The idea of such a creature fitting in with alien mythology makes for some very cool ideas and makes the universe feel bigger and more fleshed out, it’s nice.
To sum up, this was a fun episode with a lot of stuff to offer in terms of the Doctor, monster and fun supporting characters. However I feel Clara could have been better handled here.
